I just want to start out by thanking everyone in this class, including the professor for a great learning experience and want to wish everyone good luck in the future.
Ethics is the backbone of any good leadership, unethical behavior will show through and you will lose the support of your employees, as well as the community. Yukl (2013) pointed out that being ethical does not necessarily mean that a leader doesn’t have ulterior motives, leaders may still be looking out for their own gain and not that of their followers. It is also pointed out that a leader that leads by showing ethical behavior, they set an example for the followers which in turn tend to be more ethical, this is what I truly believe.
Many years ago I had my first opportunity for a manager job, the owner of the business, who I had known all my life and really respected, told me that if he gave me the job, I had to remember to always do the right thing, even if it turns out to be wrong. After telling me that, he chuckled and told me to think about that and come back to him with what was meant. I was all of twenty years old but what he told me was easy for me, as long as a person does what they believe to be ethical, that they believe it is the right thing to do but turns out with a bad outcome, it was still the ethical thing to do. When I told him, he gave me the job and told me to just remember to do the right thing, but everyone makes mistakes, just own it.
Favorite readings that drove me to greater insight was probably that of Lee Iacocca, I was early in my management career, was in the automotive industry so I was close to what was happening. I have read several of his books and was able to gain leadership insight from each one.
