To develop nursing standards of practice we start with the American Nurses Association (ANA). The out-line is simple and one we have been using since we first started our nursing careers in delivering care to our patients. The Standards of Practice.
Assessment: What is the project and collect the data that is appropriate for what our project is and what we want to accomplish. What standard are we needing to develop.
Diagnose: What are the trends, issues and concerns with developing this new standard.
Outcomes: What are we expecting to do with the newly developed standard of practice and who are we developing it for and what situation.
Planning: How are we going to achieve our new standard of practice, do we have alternatives set up. How will it affect the nurses performing as well as the patients involved (if applicable). What resources are available.
Implementation: Coordinating the plan in action, what teaching and educating will we need.
Evaluation: Did we achieve what we set out, are the ANA Standards of Professional Performance taken into consideration. “The Standards of Professional Performance describe a competent level of behavior in the professional role, including activities related to ethics, education, evidence-based practice and research, quality of practice, communication, leadership, collaboration, professional practice evaluation, resource utilization, and environmental health.”(ANA, 2010. p 43)
Developing a new nursing standard needs the people closest to the project involved first. Others to get involved with the development would be accrediting associations with which you work, such as the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN), The Institute of Medicine (IOM) and on a closer level your own State Boards of Nursing, the State Nurses Association, the Director of Educational Services at your hospital, and back to where we started, “The American Nurses Association (ANA), has assumed the responsibility for developing the scope and standards that apply to the practice of all professional nurses and serve as a template for nursing specialty practice.” (ANA, p 17)
