Discussion 1: Integrative Theories – A Correlation

Discussion 1: Integrative Theories – A Correlation

The characteristics of culture, behavior, identity, and presenting issues are unique to each one of your clients. As result, it is unlikely that one social work or integrative theory will account for every aspect of your client’s situation. How might a variety of theories, when considered together, help you gain a richer understanding of your client?  You have examined a variety of theories throughout this course. How might recognizing the potential correlations between theories affect the work you do with clients? How might those potential correlations help you better understand and incorporate a broader variety of theories in your practice?

For this Discussion, review the resources used throughout this course. Select a theory different from the one you chose for your final project.

o   Post a brief description of the theory you selected.

o   Then, explain any correlations you might draw between the theory examined here and the theory you selected for your final project.

Discussion 2: The Role of Social Work Theory in Future Social Work Practice

Now that you have examined various theory types and theories that inform the basis of social work practice, what insights have you gained from that examination? How might you apply the knowledge you gained in this course to the next course you take? How might this knowledge inform your future social work practice? You began this course with an examination of theory types and what they meant in terms of how you use theory. Has exposure to specific theories over the last several weeks changed your perspective on the theory type that most appeals to you? If so, what has triggered that change? You might recall that some theories answer the question “why,” while others provide a framework for treatment, based on answers to the question “why”. What theory resonates with you most after a closer analysis of numerous social work and integrative theories? Does that theory coincide with the theory type that appealed to you in Week 1? How might the appeal of some theories and your ability to be flexible in understanding and applying them influence your social work practice?

For this Discussion, review this week’s resources. Think about the theories you examined in this course and consider any insights you gained as a result of examining them. Select the theory that most appeals to you and then reflect on the theory type you selected as being the most appealing in Week 1 (micro, meso, macro, scientific theory, perspective, paradigm, model, and ideology). If the theory you selected no longer aligns with the theory-type you selected in Week 1, think about why that might be the case. If the theory you select now is represented by the theory type you selected in Week 1, be prepared to defend why that theory type still appeals to you most. Finally, consider how your insights regarding the theories helped prepare you for your next course and your future social work practice.

o   Post a brief summary of the important social theory insights you gained from this course.

o   Describe the theory type you selected in Week 1 (MICRO THEORY) and the theory that appeals to you most among all those covered in this course.

o   Then explain whether or not that theory type still appeals to you in relation to the theory you selected, and why.

o   If it no longer appeals to you, include a description of which theory type now appeals to you more and explain, why.

o   Finally, explain how these insights helped prepare you for your next course and your future social work practice.

Discussion 3: Questions and Controversies for Social Change

Professionals often find it hard to think beyond the daily challenges of any field. Immediate demands prevent opportunities to reflect on ideas for change that might benefit people and communities. However, the need for social change permeates the work that mental health professionals do on a daily basis. How important is it for mental health professionals to find the time to advocate for social change? How can mental health professionals make a difference in the lives of people beyond their own clients?

For this Discussion, reflect on the question or controversy you selected for your final paper. Consider how this may present an opportunity for social change.

o   Post an explanation of how the question or controversy intersects clinical psychopharmacology and the mental health profession.

o   Explain how addressing the question or controversy might be an area for social change.

o   If possible, integrate lessons learned from the “Scholars of Change” videos into your reflection.

Discussion 4: Cultural and Contextual Considerations

Mental health professional’s appreciation for culture and context extend beyond general understandings of people grouped by factors like ethnicity and sexual orientation. Mental health professionals invest in understanding the deep, underlying components of all the things that come together to make our clients who they are.

When culture and context are at odds with societal norms and hegemonic expectations, mental health professionals may need to work with clients to help instill and utilize resources to cope with the possibility of negative messages from society. In addition, mental health professionals work together with clients, for clients, and with other professionals to make changes. Consider how collaborating with others promotes positive changes in client well-being. How might collaboration through advocacy result in alternative approaches for addressing cultural or contextual considerations in treatment recommendations?

For this Discussion, view the media “Multicultural and Contextual Considerations Case Study: Marisol”in the Learning Resources. Consider new and alternative methods that mental health professionals could use to advocate for Marisol. (Transcript attached)

o   Postan explanation of how you would advocate for clients like Marisol.

o   Explain at least one strategy as a mental health professional you could facilitate culturally and contextually ethical treatment of clients.

PCN-501.RS.JedCaseStudy.docx

Please review the attachment . The case presenration.

Jed is a 38-year-old welder who came into the treatment center after being arrested for drinking and driving (DUI/DWI). His attorney has suggested that he quit drinking and enter treatment, at least until his trial, which is scheduled to occur in two months. Jed does not anticipate serving jail time, but he believes that treatment could strengthen his legal case. After his first arrest for DUI two years ago, he simply paid a fine and attended a special driver’s education program for six weeks. Jed found the program to be a “waste of time.”

Jed has been married for 8 years and has two daughters, aged 8and 6. He has had numerous arguments with his wife, Emily, concerning his drinking. He gets very angry and defensive when she confronts him about his heavy drinking and he asserts that he is not an alcoholic. He knows this is true because his father was an alcoholic and Jed says that he is not like his father. His father died as the result of a fight that occurred in traffic when he was drunk. Jed says that his father used to “beat the tar” out of him and his brother when he was drunk and that his father always belittled, taunted, and threatened their mother, whether he was drunk or sober. Jed references that his family is Irish and that it was cultural normal to drink and enjoy alcohol and that all of his family and relatives drink in excess.

Jed’s work history is very good; he misses less than one day per year. He works the day shift on weekdays, putting in time-and-a-half on most Saturdays. He is well regarded by his supervisors and peers at work. He is fearful that his employer will find out about his treatment (it is being covered by his HMO), and that people at work will learn about the second DUI arrest.

Jed drinks with his buddies from the plant, and does not think that his drinking is any more than what they do. He was just “unlucky” and was caught doing what everyone else seems to get away with. Jed’s drinking is very predictable: he drinks 8-9beers on a weeknight. Several of these are consumed at the bar with friends, the remainder at home over the course of the evening. He usually falls asleep in front of the television. When he is not working on Saturdays, he often drinks several 12-packs between Friday and Sunday. A typical Saturday involves getting up at 10:00 a.m., playing soccer with friends, and going to the bar for the rest of the day and night. This pattern leads to arguments with Emily, who calls him a “lousy father.” At times, Jed has had unsettling episodes of being unable to recall what happened while drinking. He has commented to friends that “maybe I overdo it a bit.” Several times, he has attempted to cut down on his drinking, especially after the last DUI. He once attended a few AA meetings, but did not feel that AA was helpful: “It was listening to a lot of guys whining…” and he especially did not care for the prayers.

Despite these attempts, Jed has experienced increased consumption levels over the past 2 years. He admits that, as a result of the drinking, he has become increasingly estranged from his wife and daughters. Jed feels that his marriage has been basically good, but that he would not blame

Project Management Planning

Question description

Assignment: Project Management Planning

Because many aspects of health care operations are changing, health care administrators oversee a wide variety of projects. These can include logistical projects such as moving a department to a new facility, technology-related projects such as introducing a new system or piece of equipment, or process-related projects such as initiating new procedures for patient discharge. If the project has any degree of complexity, it will benefit from a project management approach. Administrators and managers in health care need to have a working understanding of project management: why it is important, what it accomplishes, and the repercussions on the organization if its basic tenets are ignored or not followed. Within project management, the project plan is the cornerstone of successful execution of a project. The project plan is designed to guide the process and execution of a project.

For this Assignment, you will develop a project plan, using as your focus a work-related project you are doing now or will be doing in the future.

PART 1: SERVICE LEVEL AGREEMENT

It is suggested that the project you select be manageable in scope and not overly complex. You will assume that the objectives and scope of the project you have selected have been vetted and approved. The next step is to develop a project plan. You will develop a project management plan that will walk through key steps of the project management process. The objective of this Assignment is not a deep dive into the full intricacies of project management. Rather, it is to ensure that as a health care administrator, you have a solid theory and practical knowledge of key aspects of the project management process.

For Part 1 of this Assignment, you will create a Service Level Agreement (3–5 pages) which includes the following:

  • Project Description, Purpose, and Objectives: The project description delineates key aspects of a project. In 1–2 pages, your project plan should:
    • Describe the project and explain the purpose and justification for the project.
    • Explain the goals and objectives of the project.
    • Describe the requirements for the project.
    • Explain the tangible measures for acceptance criteria used to achieve project success.
  • Project Scope: The project scope defines the scope of the project and how the scope will be managed. In 2–3 pages, your project plan should:
    • Summarize, in detail, the expected deliverables for the project.
    • Explain the acceptance criteria for the project.
    • Explain the project assumptions, risks, and constraints.
  • Roles and Responsibilities: By definition, a project is a unique undertaking with a beginning and an end point. One responsibility of management is to determine who will be a part of the project team (including designation of a project manager). Ask yourself, “Who needs to be on this team to ensure that project goals are successfully met?” Consider as well the importance of communication among team members. What communication needs will each individual have? With whom will they communicate and how?
      • Using the Project Roles and Responsibilities Matrix template in the Learning Resources, list the names* and titles of all individuals or entities involved in the project. Indicate whether each stakeholder is internal or external to the project organization.

Note: For privacy purposes, please use pseudonyms.

      • Identify the internal and external stakeholders for a project.
      • Distinguish the roles and responsibilities of the project stakeholders.
      • Explain how to communicate with project stakeholders.

PART 2: PROJECT SCHEDULE

There are many different methodologies for planning and scheduling a project. For this Assignment, you will develop a Gantt chart that depicts key project activities, time allotted for each activity, and when each activity is scheduled to begin. To do so, you will need to consider dependencies. Some activities will be sequential, others may be simultaneous, and some may overlap.

Note: You may create your own Gantt chart using Excel, or search for and download a Gantt chart template.

  • Using a Gantt chart, construct a project schedule.
  • In 2–3 paragraphs of your project plan, explain the estimating techniques used to develop your project schedule. Provide rationale for why these techniques will be effective.

PART 3: STRATEGIES FOR MAINTAINING THE PROJECT BUDGET

A project begins with an approved budget. Too often, however, unless the budget is meticulously managed, budget overruns occur. Health care administrators must ensure that the project management process includes careful oversight on spending. In 2–3 pages, describe the project budget key success factors including the following:

  • Analyze at least three strategies that can be applied for due diligence and maintaining oversight of the project budget.
  • Explain at least two challenges each of these strategies might present and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Compare the positive outcomes that might result from each strategy.

PART 4: RISK MANAGEMENT, QUALITY MANAGEMENT, AND SUSTAINABILITY

Even the most straightforward and well-planned project can be impacted by unexpected circumstances. Anticipating risks is a key part of project management, and one that a health care administrator or manager must ensure is taken into consideration by the project team. Additionally, If not carefully monitored, budget and time constraints can take a toll on the quality of a project. Create a 2–4 page risk management and quality management plan, which includes the following:

  • Describe how you plan to manage risks for your project.
  • Analyze strategies for managing quality within your project.
  • Analyze strategies for sustainability of your project.
  • Describe at least two tools and/or techniques you plan to use to manage quality and defend why you chose those tools.

Health Policy Proposal Analysis (Policy Brief)

Assignment 2: Health Policy Proposal Analysis (Policy Brief)

Nurses engaged in the policy arena often are asked to provide information on a health care topic of interest to policy makers. This is frequently accomplished through developing a policy brief. A policy brief advocates for a particular recommendation (prior to the enactment of a policy). Learning how to write a policy brief in a clear, succinct, scholarly, and professional manner is an essential skill for advanced practice nurses.

For this Assignment, you will assess one of the recommendations from the Institute of Medicine’s “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health: Report Recommendations. You will then develop a policy brief to advocate for this recommendation (the written policy brief is due in Week 7).

To prepare:

  • Review      the Lavis et al. article on preparing and writing policy briefs provided      in the Learning Resources (See      attached file).
  • Select      one of the recommendations within the IOM The Future of Nursing:      Leading Change, Advancing Health: Report Recommendations to focus      on for this assignment. (For this assignment, I have selected      RECOMMENDATION 1, please see attached file)
  • Research      the history of the problem behind the recommendation and what has been      done to try to solve the problem.
  • What      does the recommendation say should be done? Are there any groups, nursing      and others, currently supporting work to implement the recommendation      (e.g., Kaiser Family Foundation, professional organizations)? Does the      recommendation suggest specific groups that should be involved in the      implementation? Think critically about how the recommendation should be      implemented – did the IOM get it right? What other strategies are possible      to consider?

By Sunday 04/15/2018 12pm,

To complete:

  • Develop      a scholarly and professionally written 2- to 3-page single-spaced policy      brief on the recommendation you selected from the IOM report following the format presented in      the Lavis et al. article (follow the exact format, including how the layout      of the paragraphs, and the way the references [at least 10 scholarly      references] are displayed at the end, numbered in-text and number plus      citation at the end, copy the same exact format as the article please).      (See attached file for the article). Include the following:
    1. Short       introduction with statement of the problem.
    2. The       selected recommendation (from the IOM Report)
    3. Background
    4. Current       characteristics
    5. The       impact of the recommendation from the perspective of consumers, nurses, other       health professionals, and additional stakeholders
    6. Current       solutions
    7. Current       status in the health policy arena
    8. Final       conclusions
    9. Resources       used to create the policy brief

Ethical And Legal Implications Of Prescribing Drugs

What type of drug should you prescribe based on your patient’s diagnosis? How much of the drug should the patient receive? How often should the drug be administered? When should the drug not be prescribed? Are there individual patient factors that could create complications when taking the drug? Should you be prescribing drugs to this patient?

These are some of the questions you might consider when selecting a treatment plan for a patient. As an advanced practice nurse prescribing drugs, you are held accountable for people’s lives on a daily basis. Patients and their families will often place trust in you because of your position. With this trust comes power and responsibility, as well as an ethical and legal obligation to “do no harm.” It is important that you are aware of current professional, legal, and ethical standards for advanced practice nurses with prescriptive authority. In this Discussion, you explore ethical and legal implications of scenarios and consider how to appropriately respond.

Scenario 1:

As a nurse practitioner, you prescribe medications for your patients. You make an error when prescribing medication to a 5-year-old patient. Rather than dosing him appropriately, you prescribe a dose suitable for an adult.

Scenario 2:

A friend calls and asks you to prescribe a medication for her. You have this autonomy, but you don’t have your friend’s medical history. You write the prescription anyway.

Scenario 3:

You see another nurse practitioner writing a prescription for her husband who is not a patient of the nurse practitioner. The prescription is for a narcotic. You can’t decide whether or not to report the incident.

Scenario 4:

During your lunch break at the hospital, you read a journal article on pharmacoeconomics. You think of a couple of patients who have recently mentioned their financial difficulties. You wonder if some of the expensive drugs you have prescribed are sufficiently managing the patients’ health conditions and improving their quality of life.

To prepare:

  • – Review Chapter 1 of the Arcangelo and Peterson text, as      well as articles from the American Nurses Association, Anderson and      Townsend, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and Philipsend and Soeken.
  • – Select one of the four scenarios listed above.
  • – Consider the ethical and legal implications of the      scenario for all stakeholders involved such as the prescriber, pharmacist,      patient, and the patient’s family.
  • – Think about two strategies that you, as an advanced      practice nurse, would use to guide your ethically and legally responsible      decision-making in this scenario.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post an explanation of the ethical and legal implications of the scenario you selected on all stakeholders involved such as the prescriber, pharmacist, patient, and the patient’s family. Describe two strategies that you, as an advanced practice nurse, would use to guide your decision making in this scenario.
